Courage to show up

Last night I watched my kids participate in swim races with their local swim club and I was amazed to see how much courage all of these kids have. Kids got on the starting blocks and some had great form, others had never done anything like it. Some did belly flops and it looked painful! I loved how they kept trying and how encouraging they were to one and another. As adults we often struggle to show up to try new things, or things in which we really don’t know what the outcome will be. We fear looking silly, or are too ashamed that we look out of place. Or worse we have determined that we aren’t any good when really we haven’t been able to put the work into a skill that needs to be developed over time.

I encourage you to do one thing every week that puts you outside of your comfort zone. I suggest you write them down in a journal or better yet keep them in a special box and at the end of the year read them to yourself. You will be amazed how your courage muscles develop and grow over time. You might even end up signing up for your first swimming race.
